Our firm had its genesis when John Pattison and William Sim, both solicitors in Paisley, joined forces in 1905. We have occupied our office at 19 Glasgow Road, Paisley, since the 1950s, having moved there from St Mirren Brae. In 2000, we opened our office at 117 Byres Road, in Glasgow’s West End.
Since 2006 the firm has been run by the two current partners, David J. Howat and Bridget M. McLaren.
Our estate agency department is one of the most successful in the west of Scotland. Based in our Byres road office the department can market your property in any part of Glasgow or Renfrewshire. We’ve been selling houses for one hundred years, and our team has a vast wealth of experience, which will ensure that your property sale is dealt with professionally and efficiently, and that the maximum price is achieved.
David J. Howat LL.B; Dip.L.P; N.P.
A graduate of Edinburgh University, although a native of Glasgow’s West End, David trained with Brown & McRae solicitors in Fraserburgh, where he learned many aspects of legal work, but quickly developed an enthusiasm and aptitude for appearing in court. A move back to Glasgow followed, and then David joined the firm in 1987, becoming a partner in 1991.
David has extensive experience in all aspects of litigation, including family and divorce work. He is frequently appointed to prepare reports in disputed residence and contact cases, acts as ‘curator’ in adoption cases, and is appointed as commissioner relative to specifications of documents.
From March 2013 to March 2015, David was Dean of the Faculty of Procurators in Paisley.
Since 2000, David has managed the estate agency side of the business, which is based in our office on Byres Road. He has considerable knowledge and experience of the property market, and the local area, being a West Ender.
David has many and varied extracurricular interests. In 2007, he was sufficiently outraged by proposals to develop a night-club in Glasgow’s Botanic Gardens that he ended up chairing the campaign group that successfully stopped it. Since then, he has been actively involved in Friends of Glasgow West, a local community pressure group that seeks to preserve the built environment in the West End, and has given talks on various aspects of the heritage of the West End.
David has chaired Byres Road & Lanes Business Improvement District from its inception in 2015.
David is also interested in music and photography (he often takes the photographs and prepares the schedules of properties we are selling) and has a passing interest in the gym.

Born in Paisley and raised in Elderslie, Bridget graduated from Strathclyde University. Bridget joined the firm in 1991, completed her traineeship, and became a partner in 1999. A background in a variety of the firm’s work gradually evolved into a specialism in conveyancing and general chambers work, such as forward planning (wills, powers of attorney) and executries.

Bridget has a reputation as a canny advisor, and for leading clients through difficult transactions. She also deals with commercial conveyancing work, and advises corporate clients on purchase and leasing of premises.
Bridget also has a burgeoning practice advising clients in relation to forward planning, such as making wills, powers of attorney, and Inheritance Tax Planning, and she finds advising our older clients particularly rewarding. She also deals with the winding up of estates.
From 2013 Bridget has been the treasurer of the Faculty of Procurators in Paisley.
